Holy Mass for the 24th Wednesday in Ordinary Time (Year C)

Homily by Fr. Daniel Voltaire Hui

Quiapo Church, 18 September 2019

Amen.

[translation]

Good morning to all of you.

Our Poong Hesus Nazareno seems to be confused in our Gospel today, he doesn’t know what else to do, he doesn’t know what else people want, our Poong Hesus Nazareno is confused, why? Because when he does good, when he heals the sick, when he casts out demons, when he preaches to people, instead of giving thanks, instead of obeying him or listening to his lessons, they criticise it, they look for the bad, they seek the hole, so Jesus does not know what to do.

This is what he says, as if he were St. John the Baptist. St. John the Baptist, preaching, was a great prophet but they criticised him, they say, “possessed by a demon” because St. John the Baptist often fasted, what was wrong with fasting, was there anything wrong with fasting, nothing bad but they seek and do evil to St. John the Baptist. Jesus, on seeing Jesus, always eating with sinners, always drinking with sinners, is it wrong to eat with sinners, or is it bad to drink with the poor, nothing right?

But sometimes we feel the same way, when someone teaches us, when someone preaches us, instead of listening to the lesson, instead of listening to what is taught, instead of correcting our wrongdoings, we seek to criticise our neighbour. Isn’t it, when you are told “hey, don’t throw your trash there” what do you say “why you, the front of your house is filthy” isn’t it, when your parents tell you “child, study hard” what do you say “why  you, you didn’t graduate” right? “child, don’t smoke ” “what about dad, he drinks hard” right? we try to criticise our neighbour, we seek the wrong, instead of listening to the correction, instead of following our teachings, what we buy is criticism. Today, too many people criticise, too many people see others wrong.

Brethren, there is nothing wrong, if you listen to the lesson, there is nothing wrong if you correct what you are doing wrong, if you find someone else’s fault, that person, he or she will take it, listen and accept that lesson taught to you.

Jesus and John the Baptist, never, never mistakenly, made no mistake whatsoever, whatever holes others were looking for, but sadly there were people who would not listen, sadly there were those who did not want to obey but whether or not it is eventually obeyed, St. John the Baptist and Jesus still teach well.

Let it be our lesson to us, listen to our neighbour, listen to what is being said and correct our mistakes rather than seek criticism for others. Amen.
